Selling Tips

If you wish to advertise your products and services for sale on our free classifieds website, we have a number of tips you should put to practice in order to get a quick sale and maximum value out of your advertisement.

1. Short precise ads work better. We allow for longer ads, but that does not mean you need to place longer ads.

2. Your goal should only be to get the prospective customer to contact you or visit your website for more information.

3. Use action words (i.e. Now, Amazing, Attractive, Confidential, etc.). These words call the customer to do something.

4. Make your product appear unique to all other product available (if any).

5. Do not try to sell your customer on your product in your ad. Just lead them to you.

6. Spark an interest or curiosity in your advertisement.

7. Posting the same ad over and over and over in a row is called "SPAMMING." Spamming will get your ads banned from our website and will get your account terminated. In addition, our research has shown that customers who see the same ad many times in a row do not respond. No one likes a spammer.

8. DO NOT try to make your product appear too good to be true. Leave out the hype. The Internet has grown, and hype does not sell anymore. Just state the real facts.

Use A Photo

A good photo can improve response to your ad by 150% or more! Take a photo with a digital camera or ask your local photo finishing shop to make a few jpeg's (from a hard copy) for you on a disk or cd. From within your account you can add photos plus descriptions anytime. Be sure to take a few different shots, it's also best to come clean with close-up shots of any defects or damaged areas.

Set The Right Price

You know how much you want for your items, but do you know how realistic that price really is?  You can search through our website as well as print ads for other similar items to yours to see what others are asking.

State in your description that the price is OBO (or best offer) - this might convince buyers to call or email you if the price is close to their budget. This will also give you the opportunity to justify the price and negotiate the sale.

Good Presentation

Perceived value goes a long way! Tidy up your items before you sell them. First impressions are everything! Wash the item and take your photos on a nice, sunny day.

Showing Your Items

When trying to sell your items online, you may still need to show it face-to-face. Meet in an agreed upon public area and try to take someone with you. Safety in numbers. Be honest with potential buyers about any serious problems or repairs. Dress respectably. If you don't appear to take good care of yourself, your buyer may feel that is how you treated your items as well!

Closing The Sale

Write a receipt for your items between you and your buyer with signatures on both copies. Include a statement that the item is being bought "as is".

Include all pertinent info on the receipt so the terms of the deal cannot be misinterpreted. Keep the receipt for your records. It will establish the date of sale and help protect you from any future liability.

Buying Tips

Do Some Research

You know how much you have or want to spend, but do you know how realistic that "deal" you found really is? Find out what similar items are selling for in local newspapers and other ads on this website.

Closing The Sale

Make sure the seller writes a receipt for both of you with signatures on both copies. The seller will likely include a statement that the item is being bought "as is" so make sure you are comfortable with this. Ask to have all the pertinent information on the receipt so the terms of the deal cannot be misinterpreted. Keep the receipt for your records.

Import Notes for Advertisers & Customers using ChesapeakeBayMarket.com for Licensed Child day Care and Daycare/Babysitting Services

Import Notes for Those Looking for Child care or Babysitting Services

All child care in Maryland is regulated by the Maryland Child Care Administration (CCA), an agency of the Maryland Department of Human Resources. You can find out more about them by visiting their website at http://www.dhr.state.md.us/cca/. It is CCA’s responsibility to ensure that safe child care is available to Maryland families.

All child care in Virginia is regulated by the Virginia Department of Social Services (DSS). It is DDS’s responsibility to ensure that safe child care is available to Virginia families. You can find out more about regulated child care in the Commonwealth of Virginia by visiting http://www.dss.state.va.us/facility/childcenter.html

For Washington D.C. Child care facilities are regulated by the Child and Residential Care Facilities Division of the Health Regulation Administration  More information regarding DC facilities and licensing can be found at http://www.dchealth.dc.gov/services/administration_offices/hra/crcfd/index.shtm

Chesapeake Bay Market requires child care providers to list their license number in their ads and to specifically use the "Licensed Child Care" subcategory. To ensure the validity of the number provided, we suggest that you contact the Maryland office of the CCA or Virginia DSS. The contact information for Maryland is located at http://www.dhr.state.md.us/cca, and for Virginia, http://www.dss.state.va.us.

Chesapeake Bay Market is not responsible for the accuracy of child care provider or babysitting service ads.  We recommend that you take the time to researching child care providers whether they be listed on Chesapeake Bay Market or not as well as using due diligence when selecting a babysitter either on your own or from these classifieds.

Important Notes for Child Care Providers

Both the state of Maryland and Commonwealth of Virginia require "child care centers" and "family child care providers" to be licensed.

Under Maryland law, a child care center is a facility operated by an individual, agency, or organization that offers child care services for part or all of the day, or on a 24-hour basis on a regular schedule, at least twice a week. You can find more about how to license a child care center by going to http://www.dhr.state.md.us/cca/license/center.htm. A family child care provider is a person who uses a residence other than the child’s home to provide paid care, on a regular basis, for one or more children who are not related to the person. You can find out more about how to become licensed as a family child care provider by going to http://www.dhr.state.md.us/cca/license/open.htm.

In Maryland a family day care home is not required to be registered if the provider is a relative of each child, is a friend of each child's parents or legal guardian and the care is provided on a non-regular basis less than 20 hours a month, or has received the care of the child from a child placement agency licensed by the Department.

In Virginia, a family day home provider is required to be licensed if at any one time she cares for more than five children from birth through age 12 in her home, other than her own children or children who reside in the home. In addition, a family day home provider who cares for more than four children under two years of age in her home at any one time, including her own children or children who reside in the home, must be licensed or registered. More information can be found at http://www.dss.state.va.us/family/selectcare.html

In Virginia, Not all child care is regulated. In Virginia, there are five types of family day homes. They are licensed, voluntarily registered, family day care system homes, local agency approved, and unregulated. Centers are either licensed, religious exempt, certified preschool or unregulated. The allowed capacity, requirements, and level of monitoring vary among regulated care. There are no requirements for unregulated care. More information can be found at http://www.dss.state.va.us/family/selectcare.html.

For facility definitions for Washington D.C., please visit http://www.dchealth.dc.gov/services/administration_offices/hra/crcfd/pd_childdev_facilities.shtm

Daycare/Babysitting

The primary reason for having a "daycare/babysitting" section and a separate "licensed child care provider" section is to easily differentiate between providers who are licensed and those who are not.

We define a babysitter as "a person who uses a residence that is the child’s home to provide paid care, on a non-regular basis, for one or more children who are not related to the person."
